About us

We are a friendly group of ramblers who get together and walk every Sunday and the first and last Thursdays of the month.

We produce a syllabus for our Spring/Summer walks, which includes short evening rambles, and a futher one for Autumn/Winter. The walks are split into different categories based on difficulty. As we walk over varied terrain, in all weathers, we advise strong walking boots be worn and waterproof clothing be carried. We take packed food with us and eat alfresco.

Walks are usually arranged via the walk leader - please contact us to find out more information!

In addition to our weekly walks, we hold informal social events in cozy local pubs, or at a member's home.

Every year, we organise a couple of short breaks away. In previous years, we have explored the Scottish Highlands, Dartmoor, Northern Portugal, the Yorkshire Dales and the Brecon Beacons.

Dogs are allowed only on our evening walks, with prior permission of the leader.

Our Story

The Huddersfield Rucksack Club was founded in 1930, a time when
working people were enduring the Economic Depression, but also
discovering the “great outdoors."

Founder members would don hob-nailed boots, khaki shorts,
canvas rucksacks and set off walking. Most members worked on Saturday mornings, so the bulk of the club’s schedule of walks took place on Sundays.

The ramblers undertook local walks as well as longer camping expeditions, making their way to such destinations by public transport.

They were tough, carrying canvas tents along with an array of cooking apparatus: stoves and pans. It was fun, and they enjoyed life to the full.

Later, the dawn of car ownership meant that members were able to
range further than just Yorkshire and Derbyshire, accessing all parts of the UK for their walks and holiday breaks.

Through all the changes over the years, the same ethos holds today:
camaraderie and the love of open spaces.
